There are a lot of ways to learn about the Israeli society. You can read the papers, you can watch Israeli TV, listen to Israeli music or just ask you friendly Israeli staff person (Hi!).

But here is another way to learn about Israeli culture that is also fun! Israeli TV commercials (Whatttt?)

Yes! Israeli commercials represent all of Israeli society, they show conflicts, jokes, and different parts of life in Israel that you might not be aware of.. Here is an example of a commercial for sweets that showcase many parts of Israeli culture:

This  is a commercial for an Israeli cell phone company that showcases the Ethiopian community.  This was a very controversial ad that generated both good and bad comments.

We even have a commercial that is about the army and the Gaza surrounding area — just to advertise a cell phone company!

I’m sure some of you have heard that the Israeli economy is struggling and the term ‘ high cost of living’ in regards to Tel Aviv or other Israeli cities. Well, while we protest and try to make things better, this issue is the focus of a  lottery company, because who doesn’t want to win just enough money for small apartment (and not live with their parents)?

As you’ve seen here, Israelis are not afraid to show the flaws during commercials, our self-humor is strong and when a commercial makes you laugh, or cry, you know it’s a good one.
